Upon first glance of Mark Ryden's work, it appears to mirror the Surrealists' fascination with the subconscious and collective memories, but Ryden consciously chooses subject matter loaded with pop-culture references. Initially, I was drawn in by the comfort of the beauty and classical references of Ryden's work, then puzzled, and finally captivated by the child-like honesty about the state of mankind and our relationships with ourselves, each other and our past, soothing and frightening me as I realized how comfortable I have become with disturbing images and situations.
