Thirsty for Typography Thursday #13 – Messages in A Bottle

Long overdue, another post for Thirsty for Typography Thursday, although somewhat deceiving since this post is to encourage everyone to get back to writing. I remember passing notes between friends instead of text messages, and talking on the phone instead of iChatting, and as connected as I constantly feel, I have to admit there is quite a void. Anthropologie sells this amazing little product that collects notes, encouraging us all to leave a paper trail.

Thirsty for Typography Thursday #10 (on a Friday) – Luke Lucas Puts It in Context

Phew, another crazy week... This week's Thirsty for Typography Thursday (brought to you on Friday) is all about fluid forms and context. Meet Luke Lucas, self taught designer who started out as a skateboarder who was fascinated by the art underside his deck by artists such as Jim Phillips and Vernon Courtlandt Johnson. Today, he work in Melbourne, Australia, and is quite busy balancing his duties as co-founder and executive director at Lifelounge with a diverse roster of freelance projects. His work is vibrant, fluid, and most importantly, always spot on. He looks at everything when designing a typeface, understanding what it needs to say and what atmosphere it needs to set in what context. Check out more of his fascinating work by visiting his website.

Thirsty for Typography Thursday #9 :: ABE's Organic Poems

For this week's Thirsty for Typography Thursday, I proudly present the work of Anna Garforth/ABE & Elly Stevens/EL. The project shown below is called Sporeborne, which consists of writing poetry lines on walls with moss to represent the unusual synthesis between advanced civilization and nature. It allows to speak from two different perspective, one from individuals and artists, the other as a spokesperson for organisms that would otherwise remain unheard. The contrast between man-made materials and organic textures sculpted into man-made shapes and words is simply stunning. The size of the medium also helps deliver the message powerfully, further emphasizing the importance of what we ignore because it is so small. Make sure to visit ABE's website to see more of their work.

Thirsty for Typography Thursday #8

Happy new year everyone, I hope that 2009 brings you plenty of joy and love... For this week's Thirsty for Typography Thursday, I proudly present Oscar Diaz, designer of this wonderful series of "self-printed" calendar and plant posters created with bleeding ink. This particular project truly resonated with me, communication time not only visually but conceptually as the ink slowly bleeds into the paper to reveal the dates. Oscar Diaz is a product designer based in London where he works with ideas applied to objects, furniture and spaces, both on commissioned and self-initiated projects. Much of Oscar's work is concerned with tweaking everyday objects or situations. Mixing influences from craft and technology, his approach is often multifaceted, investigative and playful, transforming the ordinary by challenging conventions. Thirsty for Typography #7

The First 47 is the creative footprint of Dublin-based photographer, filmmaker and designer Alex Synge and the seventh "Thirsty for Typography." Not only has Alex's work been exhibited in Dublin, London, Chicago and LA, it has also appeared in publications such as Semi-Permanent, Pencil Fight and Art Prostitute. I wasn't as impressed by the shape of the letters or the playful inconsistencies of the repeating letters as I was touched by the strong concept behind this piece. The link between the image and the words is undeniable and infinite, creating a different emotion for each viewer, may it be happiness or sadness or anything in between. To see all of The First 47's portfolio — which actually focuses on photography, make sure to visit their website.

Thirsty for Typography #6

The Graphic Designer featured this week in "Thirsty for Typography Thursday" is none other than Paramdeep Bahia from London. I wasn't able to find any information regarding this wonderful designer, but was able to view plenty of work. I'm a big fan of the typefaces shown below, especially the top one made up of tube-like shapes. Check out all of Paramdeep Bahia's work by clicking here.

Thirsty for Typography Thursday #5 (on a saturday...)

Sorry for the delay, I was completely swamped at work, but here it is, the fifth Thirty for Typography Thursday! This week's typographically gifted designer(s) is iLK. iLK is a little freelance studio located in Paris, France, made up of two very cool guys, Ludovic Prigent and his cat, Pitou. They're known for their highly developed skills in Graphic Design, Art Direction, Illustration, Identity, Web Design, Print Design, and Photography. I was instantly drawn to their clean, yet urban style. When designers throw the word "urban" around, I think too many people think gritty or grungy, but I've noticed that the new "urban" look is much cleaner, smoother, playful and bubbly. The new "urban" typography seems to be based more on flow and direction than anything else, perhaps reflecting the new beats used in music... Check out the rest of iLK's work by clicking here.
