12 Days of Christmas – Gift Idea #5

I just read both of these and completely fell in love with them. Written for teens, these very different books are sweeping the nation, creating cult-like gatherings similar to the Twilight phenomenon.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (recently featured in the Time magazine) is an awing controversial tale about children forced to play in a sadistic game created and controlled by the government where only one child can survive, and the rest die gruesomely at the hands of each other. It may become required reading in high schools– creating an uproar among parents who claim the book is too graphic and violent, whereas psychologist argue children as young as 2 years old understand the difference between murder, mercy killings, and self defense.

Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl is a dark magical tale of mystery, love, and the difficulties of growing up. Bored with the small town life he grew up in, the main character is thrilled when a new girl moves into town, but he quickly realizes the darkness that follows her is no coincidence, it is her fate and now the fate of everyone around her. Written from a boy's point of view, the story unveils quickly and directly, leaving little room for dwelling on feelings and emotions, while feverishly focusing on the dark events that begin to surround him as he unveils his family's bizarre past and a hidden world that threatens the people he loves most.

Interactive Book

"There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly" book is one of the most interactive print pieces I've run across. Not only are the illustrations beautiful and the story entertaining, but everything about the book is interactive, from the cover that is removed like a coat, to the pages that tell the story from inside the stomach, to the woman's eyes who close as upi get to the end of the story. Illustrations done by Jeremy Holmes, art direction by Kristine Brogno.

Kapitza Geometric Patterns Book

Kapitza is an independent design community company run by sisters Nicole & Petra Kapitza who share a passion for everyday life, minimalism, patterns and colors. Their studio is based in East London, a vibrant and dynamic area which forms part of the inspiration for their work. The sisters have developed an extensive series of unique picture fonts and illustrations that lie somewhere between image resource and art project.
